The Council’s Role in Planning

The Town Council is consulted on planning applications and planning policy but North Somerset Council is the planning authority and has the final say on all planning matters. Where North Somerset makes a decision contrary to the recommendation of the Town Council, they notify us of the reason.

The Town Council’s Planning Committee meets every 3 weeks to exam and discuss planning applications in and affecting the town. One is a short meeting just to consider plans and the following meeting is a full planning meeting to consider all the issues relating to that committee. Meetings are open to the public and residents can speak and make comments (with prior consent of the Chairman) on any applications that are under discussion. Written observations are also welcome.

The Committee considers many issues other than planning applications and in addition to the Planning Sub-Committee it has the following working parties: Town Centre, Winter Weather, Cycling, Airport and National Grid Action Group.

Planning applications have to be submitted to North Somerset Council, which is the planning authority. The Town Council considers these applications as part of the consultation process.
